Life experience plays a central role in my work. Though I started out doing abstract, pattern-based paintings, I have found that for me, painting is as much about meaning as visual impact. Art offers an avenue to think metaphorically, symbolically, and ironically about life as I know it. I still employ pattern, color, and decorative forms in my work, but those have receded into the background as the emotional and textual connection takes on more importance.
In terms of technique, I take a mixed-media approach, combining paint and collage, and carving pencil lines into wet oil paint to bring the images to life with the action and cartoonishness of drawing.
